This Time Last Year

Ok, I’m a week or so late, but here’s a summary of what I posted about in August of 2008….

This. Just. Sucks.
I got sick coming back from a trip out to VA and DC. Was laid up for bout a week.

Christmas in August
This is a recipe for my all time favorite holiday cookie. They can be made any time, but my family traditionally has them for Christmas. Gonna have to work on a WLS friendly version for this year.

Fan-Fiction: Copyright Versus Plagiarism
A bit of a discussion on the copyright issues around fan-fiction.

I never did get Tweeting – not sure I get Denting either.
I’ve been on Twitter for quite awhile.. last year I actually started using Identi.ca – I’ve posted over 3000 tweets/dents in the last year. Guess I kinda get it now…?

Bringing Ubuntu to the World, One PC at a Time
A bit about setting up a friend’s retired dad with Ubuntu instead of Windows after failing to get all the virus and crud off the computer for him.

Make someone smile
A rare link to another site for me… still a good read.

Adding a Tag Cloud Page to WordPress
Last year I was pushing 500 tags in my tag cloud, now it’s just under 800. That may not be a good thing.

Where’s Your Line?
My own look at cyber-bullying.

On a personal note, this time last year I was pushing 380 pounds. Today I’m under 235. That’s 145 pounds gone forever. More than my sister weighs… she says it’s like I lost a whole person. Unfortunately it isn’t her I lost… (just kidding!)

That’s it for this months round-up, see ya in a few weeks!

A Bunch Of Unrelated Thoughts

JeepI really like my Jeep.

Put the bikini top on the Jeep yesterday. I think it’s in part cause I’m not crazy about the color of my soft-stop that I would rather have the bikini top on. Both are from Bestop, great products…but I shoulda gotten a darker grey or black. oh well. I should gt a temp top though for throwing on if it rains while I’m at work… or least get the neoprene seat covers I’ve been eyeing. Time to hit the Quadratec catalog again.

Adding a Tag Cloud Page to WordPress

Ok, I’ve been playing with and cleaning up my widgets and plugins after I upgraded this WordPress install to 2.6. And without realizing it at first, I broke one of my pages when I removed the SimpleTag plugin. I figured, 2.6 has great tagging now, what do I need it for?

Well, my Tag Cloud page was using a call to that plugin to generate a list of all the tags I have used…  469 to date.

So rather than reinstall the plugin just to have that cloud, I did some playing around and here’s what I came up with.

More than you really wanted to know: JuxtaPhoto

Newborn SarahI am a bit of a geek. Yea, big shock there. I bought my first digital camera over seven years ago, a camera from before they even measured the quality in mega-pixels. I have a few shots of when my niece and nephew were first born using that camera. There were better ones out there, and it was not long before I upgraded to an 2 mega-pixel HP camera. A camera the same niece and nephew now use as a toy.

Minneopa State ParkI am on my fourth digital camera, an 8 mega-pixel Kodak. Over the last 7-8 years I have taken thousands of photos. Many of which I still have, despite loosing way too many to a hard-drive crash a few years back.

For at least a few years now, I have been looking for an online gallery to use to show off my photos, and in the process Of course being the geek that I am, I want to host my own gallery, not rely on a third party like Flickr. I have looked at dozens and actually tried out about a dozen. I finally have found the one I am sticking with.

RSS and Bookmarks, The One-Two Punch.

I recently spent a few hours going through my bookmarks, verifying they were still good, checking if it’s something I still wanted to bookmark, and then adding tags to get them organized.

While sorting through the folders that I had my bookmarks in, I came across some sites that I had forgotten about, sites that are of a blog style, where they get updated on a fairly regular basis. A couple were actual blogs, like a the LiveJournal site of a friend, others were informational sites that used blog software as their core content management system.

When these sites had first been bookmarked, I was not using an RSS feed reader like I do now, so it got me thinking about how a reader and bookmarks need to work together – I already feel like I have a bit of information overload at times, and my bookmarks were so cluttered, keeping up with those sites would have … well was about impossible.

Adding Fuel to the Fire(fox) – part 1

I use Firefox for my browser when ever humanly possible. I have installed on my Windows box at work and on my Windows based laptop. Of course it is on my Ubuntu boxes here at home. I even keep the portable version on my thumbdrive.

If you use Firefox, good for you. If you don’t… why not? You should be. And just another reason to do so is the add-ons available. I am not a power-user by any stretch, but there are some that I use that really do make my browsing life easier… and I’m going to share a couple with you now, and more over the coming days. (don’t want to overwhelm you after all.)

I am not going to get in to any real depth here, I just want to point out these things out and give you my basic impressions as to why I use it.
