June 21st, 2008 — at play
Ok, dual-purpose posting here.
First, go see Get Smart. I like Steve Carell (I’m glad he got this over Jim Carey). I haven’t gotten in to The Office, but seen some of his stuff from there, seen Little Miss Sunshine, 40 Year Old Virgin, and Dan in Real Life, and soon as I heard he had this role, I knew he would do it justice. And he did. It is seriously too bad Don Adams didn’t live long enough to do a cameo.

I am a bit of a geek. Yea, big shock there. I bought my first digital camera over seven years ago, a camera from before they even measured the quality in mega-pixels. I have a few shots of when my niece and nephew were first born using that camera. There were better ones out there, and it was not long before I upgraded to an 2 mega-pixel HP camera. A camera the same niece and nephew now use as a toy.
I am on my fourth digital camera, an 8 mega-pixel Kodak. Over the last 7-8 years I have taken thousands of photos. Many of which I still have, despite loosing way too many to a hard-drive crash a few years back.
For at least a few years now, I have been looking for an online gallery to use to show off my photos, and in the process Of course being the geek that I am, I want to host my own gallery, not rely on a third party like Flickr. I have looked at dozens and actually tried out about a dozen. I finally have found the one I am sticking with.

We’ve all seen them, even if you don’t realize what they are - favicon’s. They are the icon that replaces the generic document image in the address bar or on the tab title when viewing a site, and are used as the icon image when you save a bookmark or link to a site.
I wandered across a fairly new site, genfavicon.com that lets you create your own custom favicon file in minutes. I used the logo image from my site here and created the favicon.ico file in about three minutes. It is a pretty slick, very easy to use, straight-forward site. Just one page, that is all it needs and that is all it gives you.
You have two option to get your image in to their web-based editor - link to an existing image (that you have the right to use) online, or upload from your computer. In my case, I right-clicked on my logo image, selected Copy Image Location and posted it in the URL box under Step 1.

I have a number of blogs I follow using Bloglines, and as I come across things I sometimes IM them to friends and such. I figure I could do my own sort of “roundup” of links. I don’t know how often I’ll do this… it may even be quicker to use Twitter for something like this, but for now… here goes.

An iPod add-on I could never use - even if I had an iPod. [Gizmodo]
Something for the budding Mitch Rapp’s out there [DVice]
One number to call them all… one ring-tone to bind them? [Consumerist]
Going paperless (sorry, couldn’t come up with a catchy intro for this one) [Unclutterer]

Last Thursday was Valentine’s Day, and while I had bought a gift for my girlfriend, I think it is obligatory to also get flowers. I heard about proflowers.com on the Glenn Beck radio show, and figured I would give them a shot.
Being a guy, I didn’t do this until Tuesday the 12th, but all the promotional stuff I heard/saw on their site said it was not problem.
I decided on a plant, the Azalea Bonzai to be precise. She just started a new job a couple months ago, and I thought this might go good at her desk. During the checkout, I had the option for next-day delivery (the 13th) for a fairly good bump-up in the shipping, or two options for 2nd day (the 14th). I could pay something like $19.99 and have it there by 9am on the 14th, or $9.99 and it would be there by 5pm, though they noted most deliveries arrived by 2pm. I figured she worked till 5, so that would work fine. Continue reading →

Ok, moving from one computer to another is proving painless so far. Downloaded Griffith, if yer running Ubuntu 7.10 you have to grab 0.9.5, the repository has 0.9.4 which doesn’t like Gutsy. There were some dependency issues, so I ended up installing 0.9.4 from the repository first, then upgraded using the DEB file for 0.9.5.
Then, I copied the .griffith folder from the old computer to the new one, and when I started Griffith on the new, voila, everything was there including the half-dozen new movies I just added today.
Then I started up Evolution on the old computer and after it was done checking for new messages. A simple File - Backup Settings and everything was dumped to a tar file on my SD card. Popped it in the new computer and started Evolution on the new one. One of the first things it did was ask if I wanted to restore settings from a backup.
Still trying to get the Centro to sync, it’s having trouble seeing the phone, but I need to get my other cable… I was having issues with this cable before.
