I have had my Palm Pre a few months now and find more things to do with it all the time – like right now I’m starting this draft in Evernote while waiting for a client to show up.
With all it can do, it’s a new platform, and they can’t have it all right out of the box. Below is a few things that are on my personal wish list.
Dropbox – I’ve written about Dropbox in the past, and I almost forgot to put it on here. That’s a testement to how much it has just become part of my daily routine. I don’t think much about it, it’s just there, doing it’s thing.
I can access files now, sort of, via the web interface. Ideally, what I’ld like is some synchronization of select items since I can’t fit my 50+ gigs on the Pre, but that won’t all fit on the Pre obviously. Short of tagging specific files or folders, I’m not sure how to best resolve this excpept by having the Pre only work in an online mode where it grabs the file I want to access and uploads it again when I’m done.
However, one workaround would be to set up a basic account with the 2gig limit for the Pre and keep stuff I know I want on it in a folder I share from my paid account. Then if there another file I needed, I could grab a copy via the web interface.
KeePass – This is the password program I use for home and work. I have a copy of the portableapps.com version along with my databases in my Dropbox so I can fire it up from work or my laptop and my boss can view the work database from his Dropbox (it’s in a folder I shared with him). At home, KeePass on my Ubuntu box can read the same databases.
If there was a Pre version, I’d find a way to share the database, ideally using Dropbox as I mention above or some other sort of sync, automatic or manual.
Open Office – We’ve moved from MS Office to OOo around our office, and while it can do MS Formats, I’ve got us set up for OOo file formats by default. We rarely share a live doc outside the office, sending out PDFs instead. I know a docs editer is coming, but it would be nice if they could add in OOo support.
In a perfect world, Dropbox support is key to being able to make the best use of having my documents in my hand.
Gwibber – When it comes to micro-blogging (ie Twitter), Gwibber is what I use at home. I’m also active on, and for the most part prefer identi.ca – but I know way more people on Twitter. Gwibber lets me seamlessly keep up with both. See, identi.ca will automatically post my messages there on Twitter, and Gwibber lets me config both send and receive options, so I have it set up to read stuff from both, but only post to identi.ca, which then posts to Twitter for me. Except in the case of direct messages and @-replies, Gwibber is smart enough to know which service to send it to
Right now on the Pre, I use Spaz and Tweed. To get the same effect I do with Gwibber, I have to post on Spaz, can read incoming stuff from identi.ca on Spaz but then either need to log out of there and log in with the Twitter account, or have Tweed open on another card in order to read what’s going on with Twitter. It’s a hassle either way.
There’s likely going to be more stuff to add to this, especially as I am finding myself using the Pre and webOS stuff more and more, but right now these top my list.
