My new office has windows that are at ground level. Early May I noticed I had a neighbor… a duck, who had fashioned a bit of a nest in the corner of the building near my window. And the nest, we noticed once when the mama duck wasn’t around had an egg in it. Unfortunately, a few weeks later mama was gone, and the egg had gotten… I don’t know what. Maybe a coon or some other critter got to it, hard to say, but it was pretty well smashed.
A couple days later the landlord’s landscaper was cleaning up around the building and the nest was soon gone. We were all kinda bummed around here.
Much to our surprise though, mama came back, built a new nest, and laid two, maybe three more eggs. (I had spotted a male duck in the area shortly before this happened by the way.) And I looked out my window earlier today and was almost heart-broken to see a busted egg next to mama as she still sit on the next. At first glance, it looked like something had gotten another of her eggs.
But… (you knew this was coming, right?) a bit later I glance out the window, and this is what I saw. Well, not exactly cause I had to lean out another open window further down to get this photo, but you get the idea.

So… I am hopeful the other eggs will hatch soon as well and the lil guy (or girl) will soon have someone to hang out with. Now… I’m not sure where they’re gonna go to learn to swim, cause we are at least half-mile from a pond or lake or anything, probably further, but I’m sure mama knows what she is doing.
