We’ve all seen them, even if you don’t realize what they are - favicon’s. They are the icon that replaces the generic document image in the address bar or on the tab title when viewing a site, and are used as the icon image when you save a bookmark or link to a site.
I wandered across a fairly new site, genfavicon.com that lets you create your own custom favicon file in minutes. I used the logo image from my site here and created the favicon.ico file in about three minutes. It is a pretty slick, very easy to use, straight-forward site. Just one page, that is all it needs and that is all it gives you.
You have two option to get your image in to their web-based editor - link to an existing image (that you have the right to use) online, or upload from your computer. In my case, I right-clicked on my logo image, selected Copy Image Location and posted it in the URL box under Step 1.
Once it is in the editor you manipulate a cropping tools to get the part of the image you want to use and just click the Capture & Preview button. The preview lets you do so at different sizes to see how it would look as a saved link on a desktop as well as showing you how it will look in the address line of a browser.
Once you are happy with the results, you can download the favicon.ico file or download as a gif. After you upload the favicon.ico file to the root folder of your website, you may or may not have to edit your pages to recognize it, but don’t worry - the genfavicon page shows you the clip of text you need to add to the <head> portion of your page code. Those using something like WordPress can use the theme editor and add the code to the header template file.
I have been looking for a nice, easy way to generate favicon’s for awhile, and being that this is web-based, so much the better. The site says it is currently in beta, but I haven’t found any more info on the creators of the site, because they are Spanish site. I’m assuming their business model will be advertising - there is a basic banner image on the page.
