I bought myself a Christmas present today. I was looking at TVs, wanting to make the move to digital… but I’m not quite ready to plunk $6-700 for a decent LCD.
So, instead I plunk down $500 for a new computer.
Best Buy had the Acer M5100 on sale for $444. Out of the box it’s got the AMD Athalon 64×2 (and I admit I really have no idea what that means), 320gig sata hard drive, and 1gig DDR2 ram, multi format, dual layer DVD burner, the multi-card reader (including mini-USB) instead of a floppy (my first computer sans floppy actually), and part of what put this one on top for me over a couple others is the four USB ports on the back and four on the front of the box.
It comes with Windows Vista Premium Home Edition. I ‘played’ with it less than half an hour before putting in the Ubuntu install CD.
It was… odd… to see how little the computer came with. I haven’t purchased a new, out of the box, computer in quite awhile. I don’t actually remember what the last one I bought new was. There was a quick start sheet to tell me where to plug stuff in, some basic, USB powered speakers, very basic keyboard, power cable, and a mouse… a non-optical mouse. I realize this is a budget system, but I didn’t think they still made a mouse that wasn’t optical. whoda-thunk.
Anywho… I’m in the process of migrating stuff over to here. Unfortunately I can’t just plop my second hard drive in here like I did with the last switch, cause it’s IDE vs SATA. BUT, I have the USB to IDE cable… so it may not be too bad.
We’ll see how it goes overall.
